Amambazo the Musical returns to the Playhouse

Back by popular demand, Amambazo the Musical about Ladysmith Black Mambazo returns to Durban’s Playhouse for a short season from 4 to 14 September 2014

In October 2013 Ladysmith Black Mambazo made history by launching Mambazo the Musical, a theatrical piece that tells the musical journey of this legendary group. The production launched on a high note when its opening night was attended by the major role players in the entertainment industry and representatives of the Department of Arts and Culture. The show was well received by the KZN audience, but could not run for a longer season because of the theatre’s limited availability. So the Amambazo musical management and The Playhouse Company made a commitment that the show would come back for another season in 2014.

Now following a five-week run at the State Theatre in Pretoria earlier this year, the hit show makes a triumphant return to home base, presented in association with The Playhouse Company. Directed by Edmund Mhlongo, Amambazo the Musical boasts a cast of 25 vibrant young performers, along with a six- piece band and members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

2014 has been a great year for Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They started the year by winning a Grammy Award in January. This happened while they were on a three-month tour of the United States, which ended in  March. Back home in April they also won two SAMA awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award and an International Recognition Award. They were also the recipients of this year’s Wawela Special Award. Ttitled ‘Breaking Through The Borders’, this is given to those who have achieved international recognition through music. Amambazo the Musical’s return season at The Playhouse will celebrate these great achievements of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The musical will be recorded live for release on DVD and CD, to be distributed locally and internationally.

Amambazo the Musical recounts the journey of Ladysmith Black Mambazo from the group’s formation by Professor Joseph Shabalala in the 1950s. Major highlights include its famous collaborations with international artists such as Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, Ben Harper and Dolly Parton. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has also performed for world leaders such as the late former president Nelson Holihlahla Mandela as well as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. The group is the only African group to have won Grammy awards four times.

“We are excited about the return of our show. It’s a very special project that tells one of the most successful stories in the local music industry. From the day Professor Shabalala moved from Ladysmith to find work in Durban, to the formation of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the hits that made the group popular over the years, all is reflected in this powerful two-hour show, which has a 20-minute  interval. For those who missed the opportunity last year to watch the musical and those who want to see it again, here’s the chance to do so”, says executive producer Xolani Majozi.
