Sir James Galway & Zurich Chamber Orchestra to tour SA

28 Jan 2015

Great news for South African concert goers!  Sir James Galway, living legend of the flute and a leading icon in the world’s classical music arena for many years, will tour South Africa at the helm of the internationally renowned Zurich Chamber Orchestra and select members of the South African National Youth Orchestra early in February 2015.

Hosted by the South African National Youth Orchestra and supported by the Embassy of Switzerland and Pro Helvetia, the Galway-Zurich Chamber Orchestra lightning tour of South Africa launches with a concert at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg on 6 February at 19:30, presented as part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival.

The second leg of the tour takes place on 7 February at 19:30 in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on the Pretoria campus of the University of South Africa as part of the Unisa Music Foundation Concert Series. This will be followed by a concert in the magnificent Durban City Hall, South Africa’s largest acoustic venue, on 9 February at 19:00 in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic.

The prestigious tour concludes with a spectacular concert in Cape Town on 11 February at 20:00, presented as part of the Cape Philharmonic’s Cape Town International Summer Music Festival.

Augmented by members of National Youth Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra players under the leadership of superstar conductor-soloist Sir James Galway are set to delight South African audiences performing a generous programme of 18th and 19th century repertoire by Austrian, Russian and Italian masters spanning more than 100 years.

Works to be featured on the programme include:  Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No 59 in A Major, popularly known as ‘The Fire Symphony’, composed in 1769; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1778 virtuoso showpiece, the Flute Concerto in G Major; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s celebrated Serenade for Strings in C Major, composed in 1880; and the engaging Concerto for 2 Flutes in G Major by the late 18th century composer, Domenico Cimarosa, in which Sir James Galway shares the solo spot with his wife, the distinguished flautist, Lady Jeanne Galway.

Sir James Galway is both the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries. A modern musical master whose virtuosity on the flute is unsurpassed, Sir James’s discography of more than 70 CD releases over 40 years has seen over 30 million albums sold.

Through his appearances in the world’s great concert halls and his frequent international television appearances, he has endeared himself to millions worldwide. A consummate artist, he is also a tireless promoter of the arts, deeply committed to sharing his love of music and his incomparable musicianship with young musicians the world over.

Among the many honours and awards for his musical achievements are: the Gramophone 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award; the Grammy President’s Merit Award; Classic Brits Lifetime Achievement Award; The Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame; The National Concert Hall Dublin Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous gold and platinum CD’s.  In December 2009, Sir James was awarded the honour of being made the first Artist Laureate of the Ulster Orchestra.  He has been honoured twice by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with The OBE in 1979 and again in 2001 with a Knighthood for his services to music. Sir James lives with his wife and family in Switzerland and currently plays on the 20K ‘Galway’ Nagahara Flute – especially commissioned for him.

The Zurich Chamber Orchestra’s 2015 tour of South Africa follows its ground-breaking collaboration with National Youth Orchestra when it toured the country in 2013 under the baton of its Principal Conductor, Sir Roger Norrington. The ZCO continues to delight global audiences through its ongoing world tours. Last year saw the Orchestra undertaking an extensive tour of South Korea, Japan, China and Thailand, also making a triumphant debut at the Royal Alber Hall in London during the 2014 BBC Proms Season.

Last year South Africa’s National Youth Orchestra celebrated the 50th anniversary of its inception in 1964. With its history of 50 years of achievement, the Foundation of the National Youth Orchestra supports the training and development of South Africa's young musicians through National Courses and National and International Tours within its annual programme. 71% of South African musicians currently performing with professional orchestras in the country have participated in the National Youth Orchestra courses.  There is a strong support group of more than 50 volunteers from the alumni who are currently enrolled in programmes which support the organisation.  It has been supported for over 35 years by Sasol and is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

The National Youth Orchestra is recognised for promoting successful careers for internationally acclaimed musicians and has performed on international platforms as well as across South Africa, in major centres as well as making sure to perform in places normally neglected by symphony orchestras.
