Copy Dog Productions proudly presents Sweetie Darling, a new one-man stage comedy starring Bongani Mbatha by multi award-winning playwright-director Clinton Marius (Lollipop Lane, The Fantastical Flea Circus, B!*ch Stole My Doek).
Sweetie Darling is a romantic comedy about a young man who goes all out to prove himself. While he sets up a picnic in the park for his sweetheart, he recounts the ups and downs of his journey to happiness. As he finds himself, and love, he also finds his path to spiritual growth.
Reviewing the production’s debut performance at the 2016 Musho! Festival in Durban (where it won the coveted Suliman Family Trust award for the best production on the festival), Gisele Turner wrote in her review for Going Places: “Performed with heart and soul by Bongani Mbatha, this tragi-comic love story held the audience enthralled. The combination of Marius’ gift for telling an engaging story and Mbatha’s gift for sincere characterisation make Sweetie Darling a winner."
“The different attitudes of the generations are particularly cleverly addressed, with our hero, Jacob, caught between the advice given by his teenage sister and his grandmother. While the one has all the contemporary trends in attitude and language, the other is firmly ensconced in prayer and old fashioned morals and poor Jacob flounders to find the way forward to please the girl of his dreams.”
“It is Jacob’s charming naïveté that makes his process so watchable and heart-warming,” wrote Turner. “Sweetie Darling is filled with ‘ah’ moments that have real emotional content; the audience members reach out to Jacob’s character in his difficulties and his troubled past and his aspirations for a happy future because they reflect loss and yearning in way that is totally accessible.”
